Product description

Three-dimensional reinforcement for asphalt durability

Wiking® AS-PE Asphalt Fibres combine aramid and polyolefin to create a robust three-dimensional structure within asphalt mixes. This reinforcement significantly improves tensile strength and prevents damage caused by thermal cracking, fatigue cracks and rut formation.

Prevents cracking and rut formation By distributing tensile forces evenly throughout the asphalt layer, AS-PE fibres reduce the risk of cracks and deformation. Independent tests show rut depth reduced by more than 50%, ensuring longer-lasting pavements.

Outstanding thermal stability and strength AS-PE fibres withstand extreme temperatures, from cryogenic conditions to high heat during asphalt production. With cracking temperatures as low as –26.3 °C and tensile strength up to 3000 MPa (aramid), they deliver exceptional performance under demanding conditions.

Easy integration into existing processes No changes to installation methods are required. AS-PE fibres are added directly to binder or surface layers, including Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) and porous asphalt, with a wet mixing time of at least 45 seconds.

Environmentally responsible and recyclable AS-PE fibres are 100% recyclable and help extend pavement life by up to 50%, reducing maintenance costs and environmental impact.

The difference in aborbtion of tensile forces on asphalt

Conventional asphalt

When pressure is exerted over a long period of time, it causes ruts. Tensile forces can be absorbed only to a limited extent, leading to cracks.

Asphalt with Wiking® AS-PE FIBRE

The three-dimensional system increases the restoring force of the asphalt surface and absorbs compressive and tensile forces. This results in a considerable reduction in rut formation and improved thermal stability and ensures that tensile forces from cryogenic and shear stress are dissipated without causing any damage.

Comparison Test from IBQ Institute
IBQ Institute has tested asphalt with Wiking® AS-PE Fibres against standard AC 11. The results show that the fibres create a more homogeneous pavement with improved resistance to rutting and cracking. This means higher tensile strength, lower bulk density, and asphalt that retains its shape for longer. The documentation confirms that a small investment in fibres can deliver significantly enhanced performance and durability.

Wiking® AS-PE FIBRE

An additive with a host of benefits

Wiking® AS-PE FIBRE is a synthetic fibre mixture of aramid and polyolefin fibres approximately 18 mm long, intended to be used as three-dimensional reinforcement in binder and/or surface

Wiking® AS-PE FIBRE bridges cracks and significantly reduces thermal cracking, as well as cracks caused by material fatigue. It also cuts rut formation dramatically due to the mixture’s higher resistance to permanent deformation.

These properties alone give asphalt modified with Wiking® AS-PE FIBRE a service life roughly 50% longer than that of conventional mixtures.

Wiking® AS-PE FIBRE do not melt when the mixture is hot and are renowned for their high tensile strength and durability at both high and low temperatures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the environmental footprint of Wiking® AS-PE Asphalt Fibres?
We provide the CO₂ impact based on the material’s carbon footprint: Polyolefin fibres (Wiking® AS-PE): approx. 2.98 kg CO₂-eq/kg and Aramid fibres: approx. 8.70 kg CO₂-eq/kg
The fibres create a three-dimensional reinforcement within the asphalt, distributing tensile forces evenly. This prevents thermal cracking and rutting, extending pavement life by up to 50%.
Yes. They remain stable during asphalt production and resist cracking at temperatures as low as –26.3 °C, while maintaining strength under extreme heat as the polyoleofine strenghens the asphalt.
No. They integrate seamlessly into existing asphalt production processes with a wet mixing time of at least 45 seconds.

Yes. Using AS-PE fibres in the asphalt layer together with GeoGrid in the base layer provides optimal reinforcement. GeoGrid improves load distribution and stabilises weak subgrades, while AS-PE fibres prevent cracking and rutting in the asphalt surface.
